America had become an unreliable ally

To avoid being confused by editorializing that's based on deception, we first pretend that the editors of the Washington Examiner did not come up with a piece they might have written under the title: “Germany has become an unreliable ally,” or that they published the piece on March 8, 2021 in their online rag. Let's instead consider the facts on the ground as we find them. What do we see?

We see that for a period of four years before the election of Joe Biden's administration to the presidency of the United States, the country was governed from a White House that was populated by a family of lunatics. The loonies forced America's longtime allies in NATO to do the opposite of what the alliance was set up to do. That is, the alliance had embarked on a project meant to bring forth peace. It did so by adhering to a mode of behavior that was so attractive to other nations, they could not resist trying to join the alliance.

Whereas the project began to take shape shortly after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it came to an abrupt halt with the advent of the loonies into the White House. In fact, the nations that had joined the alliance before the start of America's lunacy, began to have second thoughts about the sanity of their joining. Not only have they questioned what the alliance stood for, it happened that even the staunchest of America's old allies began to rebuff the unreasonable demands imposed on them by the loony White House.

Here is a useful development that serves not only Germany but all of Europe, and yet turned out to displease the loonies for no reason that they could explain adequately: “Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany continues to prioritize Chinese investment.” The only criticism they leveled against this move, was to say that the German priority went over the US and Western security concerns. Furthermore, Germany continued to do as it pleased even after the American electors had tossed the crazy family out of the White House. Here is what else Germany is said to have done:

“Germany has decided to spend only 1.3% to 1.4% of its GDP on defense, far less than the 2% demanded by the tossed-out lunatic-in-chief. In addition, Germany has refused to relinquish its support for Russia's Nord Stream II energy pipeline, and continues to pressure Ukraine to accept a bad ceasefire agreement proposed by Russia. As if this were not enough, Germany refuses to shut down Russian chemical weapons facilities that have been on its soil since the days of the Cold War”.

Having made the point that it was America, and not Germany, that became unreliable during a four-year period of time, we end the pretense that it was not the editors of the Washington Examiner who wrote most of the words above. We now look at what these editors have continued to whine about. Here is a stretched-out moaning exercise concerning the German situation as they see it:

“Allies are supposed to be partners who share common interests and act in common cause. The facts do not evince a common cause between Germany and the US. Biden continues to enable Germany's bad behavior with words and deeds. Biden refuses to enforce sanctions against those involved in Nord Stream II's construction and licensing. Nor have we seen anything in pressuring NATO allies to invest more in defense”.

And here is why the editors of the Washington Examiner take heart in what France and Britain––two NATO allies––have done with regard to what the editors of the Examiner perceive as the challenge posed by China's growing power and influence, whereas France and Britain, along with Germany, consider what they did as no more than routine redeployment of their maritime forces:

“Germany deployed a naval warship to challenge Beijing's territorial claims in the South China Sea. Even then, Berlin was keen to let Beijing know its warship won't travel within 12 miles of China's claimed islands. The French deployed attack submarines to the South China Sea to conduct war exercises alongside the US Navy. The British will send their aircraft carrier to the South China Sea to embark with a US Marine Corps fighter squadron”.

Unable to sustain criticism of the newly elected moderate administration of Joe Biden, the hawkish editors of the Washington Examiner, could only ask a silly question with which to close their presentation. This is what they wrote: “So, why is Biden so deferential toward an ally that undermines America's core interests?”

What these editors fail to see, is that “core interests” remains in the eye of the beholders even if they don't see it. Peace is the lens through which the Biden team sees the world, and from that point of view Germany's stance makes sense. This contrasts with their point of view, which is that war, chaos, mayhem, blood and gore is more fun to watch and write about than the boring peaceful times where nothing happens.

Perhaps, the United Nations could turn one of those deserted islands in the Pacific Ocean into a “Fantasy Island” kind of amusement park where the theme will be war, chaos, mayhem, blood and gore. All those who hunger for that kind of amusement can go there and spend a week or two each year, satisfying their urges by living what they never cease to fantasize about. And leave the rest of us alone.
