Viewing All Cultures Under One Microscope

On June 12, 2013, David Pryce-Jones wrote: “Middle East Lessons from Turkey,” an article that was published in National Review Online. In it, the author gives his interpretation of what is unfolding in Turkey at this time. And he ends the article this way: “Throughout the Muslim Middle East, the culture predetermines the violence.”

What this means is that the author views the “culture” as being the cause, and that “violence” is the effect. Why is that? Because the culture is Muslim and Middle Eastern, he says. Does that mean every culture has its own effect? It must be because the author has generalized his views everywhere. He did it in the title, did it throughout the body of the text and did it in the conclusion. And this tells the rest of us we can go ahead and test his theory everywhere else in the world with regard to other cultures.

In America, for example, people kill each other by the tens of thousands each year. In the military, they rape each other also by the tens of thousands whether they are men or women. The same thing happens in the prisons. And if someone is still alive because he has not been gunned down yet, he will kidnap a girl and then a second girl, and then a third one. He will keep them locked up in his house for ten years or more, and he will rape them repeatedly.

And so we ask: What does that mean? Does it mean that American culture is the cause and that rape is the effect? Do people from around the world risk their lives and cross the oceans to go to America to rape and be raped? If we reach this conclusion, we should be able to paraphrase the Pryce-Jones opening sentence and write the following: The rape in America has a great deal to teach about the Judeo-Christian West, and the way they do things there. Does that sound kosher to you, David? You started this, not me.

Of course, we can go on paraphrasing what Pryce-Jones is saying about the Middle East, and apply the same rules to the Western world. For example, we could say this: Of course it is unintentional, but the conduct of American rapists is parallel to that of Britain, Austria and the rest of Europe where pedophilia is so rampant, men lock up their own daughters and rape them mercilessly. Some get to be the father and grandfather of the same child. What a culture!

How does that sound to you, David Pryce-Jones? You like this interpretation? If you don't, you better smarten up because you're not doing your people any good by being thoughtless.
